Post Logic Studios Completes DI for Hotel Rwanda(January 10, 2005)
Leading Hollywood- and New York-based post-production company Post Logic Studios has completed a digital intermediate (DI) for the award-winning feature film ?Hotel Rwanda, starring Don Cheadle and directed by Terry George. Post Logic Studios applied its artistry and technical acumen to produce a pristine Cinemascope print from HD for the critically acclaimed motion picture, which is distributed by MGM.
Following the movies success on the festival circuit, the filmmakers sought out the talent at Post Logic Studios to create a home video master. The impressive results achieved digitally with the HD transfer led to Post Logic Studios creating a fully new color-timed film inter-negative to be used for the movies theatrical roll-out, other festival engagements and awards screeners in lieu of the one initially created in the lab.
?When director Terry George and producer Alex Ho saw the results we were getting in HD, we did a test to create a completely new inter-negative digitally, said Post Logic Studios colorist Michael Underwood. ?When this was successful, we went on to scan the entire film with titles, color correct it in our theater and record the data to film. In this way, the filmmakers had a DI premiere print with the precise look they wanted in a little over a week.
Whereas work done to resize the Super 35 element to Cinemascope optically in the lab was introducing undesirable amounts of film grain, the Post Logic Cinema Digital DI allowed a clean look to be achieved quickly and effectively for both the theatrical and DVD/home video release. Steps involved Post Logic Studios scanning the 35mm IP into the digital realm, storing it onto servers in HD, color correcting and recording it back to celluloid using one of the companys several film recorders.
?The Post Logic Studios digital intermediate surpassed our already high expectations for their work, said Bruce Markoe, Executive Vice President, Feature Post, MGM. "I was pleased with the excellent work they delivered on one of this year's most important and honored films.
?Hotel Rwanda tells the true story of Paul Rusesabagina (Cheadle), whose good works and connections as the proprietor of a four-star establishment lead him to save over a thousand lives in the early 1990s Hutu-Tutsi conflict. The film won the Peoples Choice Award at the 2004 Toronto Film Festival, the Top Audience Award at AFI Fest 2004 and has been nominated for three Golden Globe awards.
The Post Logic Cinema Digital process combines artistic and engineering talent with a superior infrastructure and working environment to offer industry-leading end-to-end DI. Completing a digital intermediate at Post Logic Studios gives filmmakers greater creative freedom, flexibility and control, while eliminating grain, noise and other issues often seen in the photochemical space. Post Logic Studios DI services include telecine, online assembly, color correction, visual effects and compositing, aftermarket mastering and film out.
