Portugal Telecom Installs ARG's Media Combiners for Nationwide DTT Network(August 25, 2009)
The Media Combiners are playing a key role in the initial phase of Portugal Telecom's digital terrestrial television (DTT) single frequency network (SFN) transmission service which now covers 29 locations across Portugal and 40% of the country's viewers. Coverage is expected to reach 80% by the end of the year. Digital viewers can now access the four main television services in Portugal, namely RTP, RTP2, SIC and TVI. RTP's regional services for the Azores and Madeira are also available on digital television.
"The new Portuguese DTT network is a very important project for us and we wish to work only with suppliers whose products have proven reliability in the field," said Luís Jesus, Broadcast Video Solutions director, Novabase. "The Media Combiner is a highly reliable, easy to use and totally transparent solution that's ideally suited for use in a single frequency network."
Part of ARG's signal distribution product range, the Media Combiner 1915 enables up to eight DVB-T programme bundles to be combined into a single interface for transport over any STM-1, OC-3, DS3,E3 or IP circuit. Incoming signals can be rate limited to ensure the overall payload never exceeds the available network bandwidth. Two levels of Reed-Solomon error correction codes can be applied to the network interface to ensure valuable user signals prevail even in the presence of network bit errors. Unit setup and configuration are provided through a user-friendly, menu-based front panel display or via an internal SNMP-based web server. Media Combiner fits into a compact 1RU shelf. Dual-redundant internal power supplies are provided for maximum reliability.
"Since the launch of Media Combiner two years ago, it has continued to be the product of choice for many leading digital service providers," said Mike Footer, Director of Sales and Marketing, ARG ElectroDesign. "The installation at Portugal Telecom illustrates how our product architecture is perfect for high availability applications."
Portugal Telecom also plans to add an HD channel to its range of services.
