Plea deal seems likely in NY baby snatching case

A year later, prosecutor cites productive talks aimed at plea deal in NY baby snatching case By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) ' A prosecutor in a case against a North Carolina woman accused of snatching a newborn from a New York City hospital more than two decades ago says a plea deal may be in the works.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrea Surratt (suh-RAT') told a judge Thursday both sides were in the midst of "very productive" discussions aimed at a plea deal.

Ann Pettway, of Raleigh, N.C., has pleaded not guilty to a kidnapping charge. She was arrested last January on charges she kidnapped Carlina White from Harlem Hospital in August 1987.

White is now 24 years old. The FBI has said Pettway took the baby after her own childbearing efforts failed.

Public defender Robert Baum says the talks are in a sensitive stage and should be confidential.
