Pioneer Intros DVR-A04

Drive gets expanded media support, faster performance By Dave Nagel
Pioneer Electronics has unveiled its DVR-A04, the latest generation of its combination DVD/CD recorder. The DVR-A04 supports DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD-R and CD-RW. The A04 is the retail version of the DVR-104 found in the current generation of G4 towers, including the dual 1 GHz and 933 MHz models.

The drive is smaller than the previous-generation DVR-A03/103, which was the first-generation SuperDrive found in Mac models starting with the 733 MHz G4. It has CD buffer underrun protection, support for high speed CD-RW media and the capability to be mounted vertically.

Other features include:

  • Wider compatibility and media support including DVS-R47A/U, DVS-R470SDD50, DVS-RW47B/U and DVS-RP470SDF;
  • Write speeds of 2x for DVD-R, 1x for DVD-RW, 8x for CD-R and 4x for CD-RW;
  • Read speeds of 24x (CD), 10x (CD audio), 4x (VCD), 6x (DVD-ROM/single-layer) and 2x (DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-ROM/dual-layer);
  • Average access time of 200 ms for DVD media and 180 ms for CD media;
  • 2 MB data buffer.

The Pioneer DVR-A04 will be available this month and lists for $499. For more information, visit
