Pinnacle Adds to On-Air Olympics Look in HD and SD

Deko CG and Thunder servers to support all NBC Universal Networks (August 17, 2004)

Pinnacle Systems, Inc. announced today that NBC Olympics has expanded its Pinnacle-based broadcast graphics infrastructure for the Athens Olympics by purchasing seven additional Pinnacle Deko character generators and two additional Pinnacle Thunder servers. NBC Olympics has installed a total of 26 Deko systems for live and post production use at the Games. This is the fourth consecutive Olympic Games for which NBC has selected Pinnacle's highly efficient networked workflow for live graphics to support the rigorous demands of broadcasting the world's premier sports event. It also marks the first time NBC will air the Summer Olympics in high definition - a broadcast also supported by Pinnacle Deko graphics.

Phil Paully, director, graphics engineering and operations for NBC Olympics, "The Olympics is an extraordinary broadcast event that demands excellence at every turn. Pinnacle live graphics products not only provide NBC Olympics with exceptional creative tools, the systems give NBC a streamlined, networked workflow that makes it easier to manage the complexity presented by a production of this massive scale. Pinnacle Deko character generators and Thunder servers enable NBC Olympics to orchestrate scores, clocks, breaking news, stunning visual effects plus thousands of clips and stills in a way that captures billions of eyes worldwide."

The Athens Olympics will be covered around the clock by NBC Universal networks, including NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, USA, Bravo, and broadcast in Spanish by Telemundo. The HD and SD broadcasts both access the same database of graphics images, making it easy for NBC Olympics to manage the dual format broadcast.

"The Olympics broadcasts set the standard for sports broadcast for years to come," said Ajay Chopra, COO of Pinnacle Systems. "We are honored that NBC continues to choose Pinnacle live graphics systems for their most demanding applications from major sports events like the Olympics to 24-hour news coverage on MSNBC and CNBC. The networked workflow and automated features of Pinnacle Deko and Thunder reduce the number of graphics that operators must create, increase productivity and creative flexibility; and enable NBC to maintain a high-quality, consistent on-air look."
