Phonoscope Creates IP Video Network With EtherneTVVBrick?s IP video technology used in fiber optic Metropolitan Area Network (November 09, 2004)
VBrick Systems, Inc. (www.VBrick.com), the leader in affordable video over IP network solutions, and Phonoscope (www.phonoscope.com), the developer of the nation's largest privately-owned fiber optic Metropolitan Area Network (MAN), today announced a new service on its 10 Gigabit fiber backbone to deliver a range of advanced IP video solutions to the Texas Medical Center, K-12 schools and universities, businesses, and government agencies in the greater Houston area.
The partnership will allow these Houston-area entities to easily leverage video as a mission-critical communications tool. With an extensive fiber optic network totaling more than 7,500 miles, Phonoscope plans to achieve its vision of offering voice, video and data services through the deployment of VBrick's award winning EtherneTV solution. EtherneTV provides a high-quality, cost-effective platform allowing Phonoscope to provide live video and on-demand services to viewers located throughout the city.
Phonoscope has aligned with more than 23 school districts to deliver 14 channels of MPEG video to desktops around the city. These channels distribute educational content as well as distance-learning courses designed to increase student's access to classroom learning opportunities and improve teacher training. Phonoscope is also providing more than 2,000 business customers and the world renowned Texas Medical Center, with access to 31 channels of MPEG encoded business-related content, streamed to the desktop or boardroom.
"Phonoscope has enabled the city of Houston to become one of the country's most advanced communications technology hubs," said Lee Cook, Founder and CEO of Phonoscope. "With IP-based video, Houston completes the Triple Play package of voice, video and data services by offering its citizens real-time DVD-quality video as a key communications tool. This first-of-its-kind system will allow numerous entities to securely view, store and retrieve their own DVD-quality video streams without the need to purchase capital equipment."
"We are pleased to partner with Phonoscope to provide the city of Houston a cost-effective service that will expand the reach of video to and from the Texas Medical Center, local businesses, schools, and government agencies affiliated with the Phonoscope MAN," said Richard Mavrogeanes, Founder and CTO of VBrick Systems. "VBrick's mission is to enable all schools, businesses, medical practitioners and the government to easily view and distribute DVD-quality video to desktops in the classroom, conference room, or to any location the network reaches."
The video network service will be unveiled at a November 9th video technology conference, "Phonoscope Digital Learning Consortium, a Meeting of Interested Minds." During this session, an Internet2 connection from Phonoscope through Rice University will be used to demonstrate remote DVD-quality live and video-on-demand streaming from VBrick's offices in Wallingford, CT to Houston, TX. Rich Mavrogeanes of VBrick Systems and Lee Cook of Phonoscope will be facilitating the meeting.
