Phoenix bus riders learn strike's full effectImpact of Phoenix, Tempe bus driver strike felt in full during Monday commute
PHOENIX (AP) ' The impact of a strike by about 900 bus drivers in Phoenix and nearby Tempe was felt for the first time during Monday's commute.
The drivers went on strike Saturday against Veolia Transportation over wages and benefit disputes. The two sides had been negotiating for nearly two years but couldn't reach a deal.
Veolia says a federal mediator has contacted the union and that the both sides are scheduled to meet Tuesday.
The Phoenix and Tempe drivers operate 50 of the 101 routes served by the regional Valley Metro transit system.
Officials say the strike has badly affected bus service.
Riders are urged to make other arrangements or check route on the Valley Metro website. Valley Metro serves more than 200,000 bus riders a day.
Metro light rail isn't affected.
