Philly airport: SUV driving down runway 'rare'

Philly airport: SUV driving down runway after crashing through fence 'rare,' field is secure By The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ' Philadelphia International Airport officials say the case of a man crashing his SUV through a fence and driving up and down the runway was "very rare" and the facility is secure.

The airport was closed Thursday for nearly 30 minutes. Police say a 24-year-old Chadds Ford man rammed through a fence in his Jeep and sped onto two runways before being apprehended five minutes later. In the meantime, planes preparing to land circled the skies and other planes stalled on the tarmac.

Airport officials said Friday that perimeter fencing "meets or exceeds all federally mandated standards" and "our airfield is secure."

A Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman says security protocols worked because the man was spotted, immediately pursued and arrested.

Terrorism isn't suspected. The man faces DUI and reckless endangerment charges.
