Pentagon limits F-22 fighter flights

Panetta limits F-22 fighter to flights near landing zones due to oxygen-deficit problems By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) ' Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has limited the flights of the F-22 fighter jet to regions where pilots can quickly land the plane if they experience oxygen problems.

Pentagon press secretary George Little says the limits will not affect the war zone in Afghanistan because the geography allows sufficient landing areas.

Pilots of the stealth fighter have complained about oxygen-deficit problems which have resulted in pilot dizziness, blackouts and other symptoms that arise when the body doesn't receive enough oxygen.

Air Force officials say they have taken steps to fix the problem, but still haven't pinpointed what's causing it.

Panetta has also ordered the Air Force to expedite installation of backup oxygen systems in the aircraft.
