Pentagon knocks Lejeune over Marine's rape probe

Pentagon probe criticizes Lejeune handling of pregnant Marine's rape claim before her murder By The Associated Press

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) ' The Pentagon's inspector general is criticizing Camp Lejeune officials for inadequate and incomplete handling of a Marine's rape complaint against a member of her unit who later murdered her.

A report released Friday by Department of Defense inspector criticized the response of military criminal investigators, sexual assault advocacy workers and unit commanders after Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach reported she was sexually assaulted in 2007.

Lauterbach, of Vandalia, Ohio, had accused former Cpl. Cesar Laurean of raping her.

Laurean, who's from Las Vegas, was convicted last year of killing the pregnant Lauterbach with a crowbar and burying her burned remains in the backyard of his home.

The Marines Corps responded by saying there were administrative errors in handling Lauterbach's complaint, but that command leaders responded appropriately overall.
