Panasonic Ships DVCPRO VTR With DV Format RecordingNew Unit Also Features DVCAM Playback (July 31, 2001) Panasonic has announced the availability of the AJ-D455 DVCPRO studio editing VTR, the first DVCPRO model to also offer DV-format recording.
The AJ-D455 records in DVCPRO, standard DV and mini-DV formats, and plays back DVCPRO, DV and DVCAM formats, meeting today's demanding applications from IEEE-1394 based desktop editing to fast-paced tape-to-tape news editing. In both record and playback, a cassette detection function automatically selects the proper mode for the type of cassette loaded.
Panasonic's DVCPRO format features high-quality digital acquisition, editing, recording and archiving. According to Panasonic, it is the most rapidly adopted professional video format in history, with more than 800 U.S. television stations utilizing DVCPRO equipment daily.
"The AJ-D455 is the definitive workhorse VTR, delivering unprecedented production versatility to videographers who require intra-format IEEE-1394 editing capabilities, and delivers broadcasters the flexibility of expediting DV based footage from stringers or viewers," said Dave Oren, Product Marketing Manager, Panasonic Broadcast.
The AJ-D455 provides continuous recording and playback of 184 minutes in DVCPRO and 276 minutes in the DV format, permitting the recording of long-length programming on a single tape cassette for added convenience in production and transmission.
The VTR is equipped with level-adjustable AES/EBU digital audio in/out and offers optional boards for Serial Digital Interface (SDI) and IEEE 1394 digital in/out. The AJ-D455 also offers data conversion between DVCPRO and DV/DVCAM format IEEE-1394 protocols, providing a seamless approach to multi-format IEEE-1394 based nonlinear editing.
The unit features a built-in SMPTE time code generator and reader, and a 9-pin serial remote (RS-422A) terminal, which permits the VTR to be used with an external editing controller for frame accurate editing. The AJ-D455's control track contains color-frame information for perfectly color-framed edits. With analog input/output, SDI digital interface (optional) and versatile control interfacing via RS-422A and RS-232C remote, the AJ-D455 addresses demanding applications in both nonlinear and linear editing.
The AJ-D455 offers Digital Still and Digital Slow Motion playback at up to 43X normal speed, forward or reverse searching at 16/32/60x normal speed, with the search image in full color, as well as jog operation via an external controller.
In DVCPRO format mode, the AJ-D455 features two 16-bit/48-kHz sampled digital audio channels for audio that surpasses CD quality. An audio cue track allows a user to hear the recoded audio at high search speeds, and Control Track provides intelligent tape handling.
Users can adjust audio recording levels for both analog and digital inputs (AES/EBU, SDI or IEEE-1394). Each audio channel can be adjusted while viewing the level meter display. Using the optional encoder remote, users can adjust digital output images the same way as analog signals, greatly improving performance with digital interfaces.
The AJ-D455 provides outstanding system versatility, with analog component/composite/S-video and audio input/outputs for connection to existing analog systems. With its compact 4U size, the DVCPRO VTR fits a 19-inch rack. A channel condition indicator lets the operator view actual conditions, and an on-screen menu display permits a user to easily change many initial system settings. An AJ-CS455 mini-DV cassette adaptor, which permits mini-DV recording, is provided as a standard accessory.
The AJ-D455 is available at a suggested list price of $8,350.
From 480i to 24p High Definition, DVCPRO offers the widest range of field and studio production tools within a single extensible format. Operating at 25Mbps, 50Mbps or 100Mbps, DVCPRO delivers on the industry's requirements--cost-effective, reliable and lightweight cameras, studio recorders and servers, operating with high quality and easily editable intra-frame compression with complete data networking choices including ATM, FTP and SDTI protocols.
