Panasonic Enhances Aesthetic At Rams Head Live!

16:9 convertible cameras capture performances at Baltimore?s premier live music venue (June 14, 2005)

Since its opening in Baltimores Inner Harbor area last December, Rams Head Live! has quickly become one of the East Coasts leading entertainment venues, presenting well-known acts from across the musical spectrum?the likes of Elvis Costello, Third Eye Blind, Arlo Guthrie, Lyle Lovett, Bo Diddley, Dr. John, Herbie Hancock and many more.

With up to 320 shows planned in 2005, Rams Head Live occupies 26,000 square feet featuring three audience levels, a 160-seat signature Rams Head Tavern, five bars, three food stations--and 43 high-contrast Panasonic widescreen plasma displays including 42 and 50 professional high definition models, as well as seven Panasonic 22 LCD panels. (Twenty-four additional Panasonic plasmas were purchased and divided among five other Rams Head venues in Maryland and nearby Delaware.)

The venue also utilizes three AW-E860 2/3" 3-CCD 16:9/4:3 convertible cameras, strategically installed with pan/tilt heads for live shots of the performers, and a fourth camera (Panasonics CL-924A) used on-stage as a ?drum cam, essentially an effects camera on a mic.

Washington Professional Systems/WPS (Wheaton, MD), a longtime Panasonic dealer, handled the design, sale and installation of the equipment, with consultant Garth ?Gaff Michael as chief designer and WPS vice-president Greg Lukens as overall supervisor and audio specialist.

?The vision of Rams Head owner Bill Meuhlhauser is substantially above the norm, said designer Michael. ?He wanted the audience to be enveloped, to be engaged at many different levels with same superior quality of experience. The Panasonic plasmas are critical to realizing this aesthetic. Not only are they omnipresent?anywhere youre standing, you can see a plasma?they are also unobtrusive, look great, and are in keeping with the overall 16x9 design of the room.

The ?three-tiered Rams Head Live! comprises a stage level, where up to 2000 audience members can stand, either in front of the performance area or at one of the bars. Overlooking this ?ground floor are the second level, with food stations and bar areas, and a third level, with limited seating and a VIP area. The Panasonic 16:9 HD plasma displays are installed throughout to maximize the audiences exposure to the music. The plasmas in the adjacent tavern (separated by glass from the performance area) can either display the live event or tout coming attractions. A Leitch all-digital, multi-port router carries the live video signal to all the displays.

According to WPSs Lukens, ?The plasmas are a superior display product. Ideal for Rams Head Live!, the 16:9 plasmas offer amazing imaging.

Michael added, ?The bands have loved the space. I think this is what a music venue should always be, with the physical environment engrossing the audience without being intrusive. Key to this milieu, the Panasonic plasmas deliver pristine video, and over time, running constantly, they have been extremely stable.

Panasonic Broadcasts seventh generation of professional plasma displays consist of five 7-Series models, the 65 TH-65PHD7UY, 50 TH-50PHD7UY and 42 TH-42PHD7UY high definition panels, and the 42 TH-42PWD7UY and 37 TH-37PWD7UY standard definition panels. The 7-Series family features Panasonics phenomenal image quality, high contrast (4000:1on SD models and 3000:1 on HD units), 8.58 billion displayable colors, a 60,000-hour service life, and are equipped with interchangeable, multi-function slots for customizing the panels for an array of applications, including multi-screen display.
