Pakistan to US: Replace drones with jets

Pakistan and US resuming counterterror talks with a familiar fight over US drones By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) U.S. and Pakistani officials say Pakistan's intelligence chief will head to Washington late this month to resume counterterrorism talks suspended over a deadly border incident last year that killed two dozen Pakistani troops.

CIA Director David Petraeus and his Pakistani counterpart will start at an impasse, with the U.S. already determined to reject Pakistan's demands to end CIA drone strikes. Pakistan wants drones limited to gathering intelligence, leaving the targeting of militants to Pakistani jets.

Yet each side is also signaling willingness to take confidence-building steps to start sharing intelligence again, as they did before the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan.

All officials spoke anonymously to discuss sensitive strategic matters.

The White House and CIA declined to comment.
