Pa. shelter owner to trial in euthanized-dogs case

Pittsburgh-area shelter owner to trial on charges he billed for euthanizing nonexistent dogs By The Associated Press

MCKEES ROCKS, Pa. (AP) ' The owner of a Pittsburgh-area animal shelter must stand trial on charges he stole more than $37,000 in state funds by telling a sleeping-dogs lie.

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture's organized crime unit says Bernard Dudash collected the money from the department for dogs that he claimed to put to sleep but that never existed.

Dudash hasn't commented on the charges. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says he waived his right to a preliminary hearing Tuesday.

Dudash's Triangle Pet Control Services in McKees Rocks contracts pet control services for more than 50 southwestern Pennsylvania communities.

Dudash is paid $30 for each dog euthanized. He's accused of collecting $37,384 between July 2007 and last April by filing false reimbursement reports. He's charged with theft by deception and tampering with records.
