PTC Announces New Pro/ENGINEER Mechanism Dynamics Option

Pro/ENGINEER Mechanism Dynamics Option adds real-world virtual prototyping to PTC's Mechanism Design Capabilities (October 01, 2001)
PTC announced a new virtual prototyping product for the simulation of mechanism dynamics, Pro/ENGINEER Mechanism Dynamics Option (MDO). MDO provides additional functionality to the existing Mechanism Design Extension (MDX), allowing engineers to understand and improve the dynamic performance of a mechanism. MDO is a critical tool for designers when forces and accelerations are important in determining how a mechanism functions.

MDO improves the mechanism development process by enabling real-world virtual prototyping and eliminating the need to solely rely on physical prototypes to understand the performance of a mechanism. When mechanisms operate in real life, the forces that are generated depend on the acceleration and weight of the parts. Typically, designers use devices like motors, springs and dampers to control these forces and to ensure that the mechanism works as intended. In these and many other situations, designers need the functionality provided for in MDO to include dynamic effects in a virtual prototype in order to simulate mechanism behavior accurately.

"Mechanisms are ubiquitous throughout many industries and products," said Brian Shepherd, senior vice president, MCAD Solutions, PTC, "In many cases, they form the interface between the consumer and the product in operation. With MDO, PTC now provides a complete virtual prototyping capability within the familiar Pro/ENGINEER working environment. This functionality will allow designers to simulate and improve their product as part of the product development process, leading to fewer hardware prototypes and test cycles."

Key features in Pro/ENGINEER Mechanism Dynamics Option include:

-- The ability to model gravity, force motors, point forces and body torque

-- The ability to model springs, dampers, cam and slot impacts and friction

-- Dynamic, static and force balance simulations

-- Comprehensive results graphing and animated display of forces

-- Reaction force calculation for Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

PTC worked closely with Schneider Electric, a world leader in electrical switchgear, to develop its mechanism design capabilities. Schneider provided user requirements, technology feedback and also product testing during development.
