POP Sound Voice-overs on Medal of Honor: European Assault

(July 26, 2005)

POP Sound recently provided original voice-over recording services for Medal of Honor: European Assault, the latest video game from Electronic Arts award-winning Medal of Honor franchise for PlayStation2, Xbox and Nintendo GameCube systems. The game, developed by EA in partnership with acclaimed Hollywood writer/director John Milius (Apocalypse Now, Red Dawn, Conan the Barbarian), puts players in the role of a U.S. Army Lieutenant engaged in critical missions in Europe during World War II. It is being released this month.

POP Sound Mixer Michael Miller served as ADR mixer on the project, which spanned six weeks and involved a cast of more than 20 voice actors. The cast included native German and Russian speakers portraying soldiers from those nations. Medal of Honor military consultant, Captain Dale Dye, U.S. Marine Corps, makes a cameo appearance in the game in the Battle of the Bulge sequence.

Miller, who worked with EA Director Adam Foshko in recording game dialogue as well as other vocalizations made by soldiers in battle, noted that the challenge was attaining the level of realism that Medal of Honor is known for. ?The game is intended to deliver an authentic World War II experience within a cinematic presentation, said Miller. ?One of the innovations of European Assault is an open battlefield. Features like that enhance the game experience and demand high production value.

?This game includes a high degree of interaction between characters, Miller added. ?We might have six or more characters in the record booth, often yelling at the same time. In such instances, we used baffles to get as much separation between the characters as possible so that one performance didnt bleed into the next mike.

Miller used Sennheiser 416 microphones and recorded to a Digidesign ProTools digital audio workstation. The vocals were recorded with no processing and minimal compression to provide EA with maximum flexibility in editing and in mixing the vocals with music and sound effects. ?Our work occurs very early in the process of the games development, Miller explained. ?The vocal cues could end up in the foreground or the background, so we try to keep it as dry as possible.

POP Sound has provided original voice recording services for numerous EA titles, including Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault, Madden NFL 2005 (with Al Michaels)  and Catwoman (with Halle Berry).
