PLX to Present on Host-to-Host Connectivity, I/O Sharing Using PCI Express Gen3 at Server Design Summit(November 21, 2011)
SUNNYVALE, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 11/21/11 -- PLX Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: PLXT), a leader in high-speed connectivity solutions for the enterprise data center, today announced it will deliver a presentation on data-center clustering using PCI Express (PCIe) at the upcoming Server Design Summit, in Santa Clara, Calif. Titled "Scaling Data Center Services with PCI Express," the presentation by Ajoy Aswadhati, PLX® director of system products -- Nov. 29, 2:30 p.m. -- will provide the audience with an in-depth look at how PCIe enables host-to-host connectivity and I/O sharing in servers and switches, thus empowering a new generation of lower-cost, low-power, simplified architectures for data centers, cloud computing and other powerful server-centric applications.
The PLX presentation is part of the Server Design Summit's System Scaling and Networking track. This session will feature a discussion on how PCIe provides a simple, elegant interface to expand servers so that they meet the needs of higher performance and greater flexibility for today's demanding enterprise environments. Aswadhati will address a range of PCIe-clustering issues critical to efficient server designs: the various types of clustering, the evolution of PCIe through the current 3.0 standard (PCIe Gen3), shared I/Os using non-transparency (NT), PCIe fabrics using optical cabling, software requirements, and cost and power savings through PCIe, followed by selected case studies in server design.
PCIe Gen3 leverages a legacy of interconnect technology spanning two decades. The PCI Express Base Specification 3.0 dictates bidirectional 8GT/s of traffic per serial lane, enabling a PCIe Gen3 48-lane switch to manage 96GBps of bi-directional peer-to-peer traffic. Due to PCIe's far-reaching applicability in servers, computing, communications and industrial applications, its ecosystem is widely deployed and its cost efficiencies are realized industry-wide. Technology such as NT has enabled PCIe to provide to cloud computing and data centers a level of host-to-host connectivity not capable in other interconnect technologies.
PLX is the global leader in PCIe switching technology with more than 65 percent market share, and for years has been providing PCIe switches to worldwide manufacturers of servers, storage systems and other products used in data centers, enterprise systems and cloud computing. PLX was the industry's first vendor to introduce PCIe Gen1 and today offers the market's only production-ready PCIe Gen3 (8Gb/s) switches, which are designed to optimize servers, communications systems, graphics, and other performance-demanding applications. The PLX ExpressLane family of more than 40 highly configurable switches includes devices ranging from three to 96 lanes and three to 24 ports, and features the industry's lowest latency and power. The company is currently shipping more than one-million PCIe devices per quarter to global designers.
PLX has developed an online video (via YouTube) providing an explanation and illustrations of PCIe clustering:
