PICTORION das werk Finds Future of DI With da Vinci Resolve

(January 23, 2006)

das werk novalisstrasse GmbH, the Berlin based subsidiary of PICTORION das werk, a post-production firm with facilities located throughout Germany, has purchased a Resolve RT digital mastering suite for nonlinear grading of feature films, music videos, and commercials.  Resolve's ability to connect directly to das werk novalisstrasse's 15TB SAN -- a unique characteristic of da Vinci's digital intermediate solution -- has provided das werk novalisstrasse with the most efficient workflow for allowing multiple users to switch quickly and conveniently between material and equipment while also realizing the full benefits of a DI process.

Resolve's digital mastering suite of tools expands on da Vinci's Emmy® Award-winning 2K Plus color enhancement system with program-conforming tools designed specifically for the digital intermediate environment. The system's open architecture enables the browsing and selection of image data from a SAN or local storage, allowing multiple PICTORION das werk colorists to access the material in any order, at any given time.

After importing EDLs into Resolve, PICTORION das werk operators can use a single interface to conform the material, add in-context color enhancement, and produce a conformed master. Acceleration with the da Vinci exclusive PowerPlantT programmable hardware allows real-time, multilayered color correction on full-film-resolution images without the need for proxies. Resolve also includes high-quality pan, tilt, zoom, and rotate functions of high-resolution images. das werk novalisstrasse has already used the system to finish two feature films, "Knallhart" and "Kometen," the latter of which was recognized at the Hof International Film Festival in October.

"Our operators' existing knowledge of the da Vinci grading panel and software interface made the leap to DI an easy one for us," added Bosse. "Resolve's flowchart-like assembly of grading nodes gives us a very clear overview of our work. In our productions, it is very important that we're able to decide freely, at any point, between various color grading decisions. In this respect and many others, Resolve has provided the perfect solution. It's a rocking good machine."
