PESA Routers Give KPDX and KPTV Critical Flexibility

Upgrades routing systems to accommodate consolidated master control (October 25, 2004)

PESA Switching Systems, Inc., a leading provider of analog and digital video and audio equipment, today announced that Meredith Broadcasting stations KPTV and KPDX have upgraded their combined PESA routing systems to accommodate consolidated master control operations for both FOX 12 Oregon and UPN 49. PESA equipment originally installed for KPDX during a new studio build in 2000 has been expanded to facilitate production and playout for the added station, purchased by Meredith in 2002.

"We knew in 2000 when we built the system that we would need to expand at some point, but what we didn't know was that in two years the Meredith Corporation would purchase KPTV here in Portland and make us a duopoly," explained Ed Williams, director of engineering for FOX 12 Oregon and UPN 49. "We pulled the entire KPTV television station, newsroom and all, into this one building, and in operating both stations out of one facility, we filled up our router very quickly. Through a simple upgrade to the PESA systems we purchased in 2000, we gained the space we needed to establish a flexible production environment for KPDX and KPTV."

In 2000, anticipating future growth, KPDX installed a PESA Tiger 144x144 frame and populated the frame to 112x96 with both analog and digital cards. The facility also installed a separate 24x16 analog router and various other dubbing routers. In August 2004, Williams and his fellow engineers built out the Tiger frame to its full capacity, making it a completely digital 144x144 system. They also replaced the 24x16 analog router with a Jaguar 64x64 and tied the two routers together. The Tiger and Jaguar, along with a PESA RS422 Port Switcher and a brand new Ocelot-HD 8x8 high definition router, now form the core of the facility's router system under the control of PESA's 3500PRO Windows-based system controller.

PESA's Tiger makes expansion affordable with installation of standard digital and/or analog cards in increments of eight inputs and 16 outputs. Each 48x16 matrix offers high crosspoint density in a 12-RU video chassis or 8-RU stereo audio chassis. The Jaguar family of routing switchers is available in analog audio, analog video, digital video, and digital audio versions. Each 64x64 matrix offers high crosspoint density in a 5- or 6-RU chassis. The Tiger and Jaguar both feature a compact chassis design that offers single or dual internal controllers, as well as internal redundant power supplies.

"PESA has always given us excellent value for the dollar in a large router, and that's why we keep working with the company," continued Williams. "PESA equipment also offers one of the simplest programming interfaces for router setup, which is important for us because we make changes on a regular basis. With the PESA gear, it's very easy to make those changes in a basic Windows GUI."
