Owner of NYC protest park navigates a dilemma

NYC protest park's owner, a symbol of demonstrators' cause, navigates a legal quandary By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) ' For the activists of Occupy Wall Street, the plaza of Zuccotti Park has become their home away from home. But it's safe to say the corporation that owns the plaza never envisioned having these kinds of houseguests.

Zuccotti Park is among more than 500 "bonus plazas" in New York City. Bonus plazas are privately owned public parks created as a compromise between the city and developers.

Brookfield Office Properties is the wealthy real estate corporation that owns Zuccotti Park. Brookfield tried and failed to kick the protesters out last week to clean it, but its options are limited.

Some experts think bonus plazas could launch a new chapter of activism in the city's history.
