Orient Power Adopts Sigma's MPEG-4 Decoder Chip

New Convergence Box Integrates TV, DVD and Internet Access (January 09, 2002)
Sigma Designs (Nasdaq:SIGM), a leader in IP video streaming solutions and OPDT Ltd., a division of Orient Power Holdings Limited (HKSE: OPDT, code 615), a leader in lifestyle technology, have jointly announced a new convergence product developed by Orient Power, featuring Sigma's new EM8470 MPEG-4 decoder chip. A preliminary version of the Orbitron Bluebird will be demonstrated for the first time at CES 2002 and will be distributed worldwide by a number of Orient Power OEM partners beginning in the second quarter.

Bluebird is a next generation convergence product, designed to bring home entertainment to a new level with the integration of TV, DVD and high fidelity sound. In addition to integrating leading entertainment features, Bluebird provides Internet access through Ethernet or dial-up modem to enable an enhanced web browser and email manager, as well as a personal organizer. A full function remote control and keyboard allow simple user interaction, with a smart card interface for access control. Demonstrations of Bluebird can be arranged at Orient Power's showcase, located at the Las Vegas Hilton, Suite 660.

"Orient Power and its OEMs are moving into the next generation of digital video consumer products, starting with interactive DVD," stated Peter A. Lee, CEO of OPDT at Orient Power. "Towards this goal, Sigma Designs is the ideal technology partner to provide us with silicon solutions for DVD playback, MPEG-4 streaming support and other advanced entertainment features."

Bluebird is based on Sigma's EM8470 chip, the industry's first MPEG-4 decoder to support full resolution (720x576) and streaming video based on ISMA specification 1.0. Working under strategic alliances, Sigma's EM8470 decoder provides a complete streaming solution based on MPEG-4 and ISMA standards, and establishes an interoperable solution with the leading providers of MPEG-4 encoder and server products, such as Envivio and iVAST. In addition to key MPEG-4 features, the EM8470 series also provides a highly integrated solution for decoding MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and DVD.

"MPEG-4 represents the standard for the next wave of digital video capabilities being introduced for home entertainment," said Ken Lowe, vice president of business development, Sigma Designs. "As evidenced by the increase of new product introductions, Sigma is quickly becoming the dominant provider of convergence products with IP video streaming, based on its EM8470 series of MPEG-4 decoders."

The two companies also plan to introduce a highly integrated solution for Internet capable DVD players with MPEG-4 and progressive scanning capabilities for the second half of 2002.
