OpenSFS and Whamcloud Sign Lustre Community Tree Development Agreement

OpenSFS and Whamcloud to Provide Lustre Gatekeeping and Release Management (November 15, 2011)

DANVILLE, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 11/15/11 -- Whamcloud, a venture-backed company formed from a worldwide network of high-performance computing (HPC) storage industry veterans, announced today a wide-reaching Lustre community tree development agreement with OpenSFS, the Lustre community group in North America. The agreement ensures funding and development resources for the Lustre master codebase over the long-term.

"We've been working closely with Whamcloud on Lustre development over the past year. This deepens and broadens our commitment to Lustre and makes sure that Lustre will continue to have strong financial backing coupled with world-class engineering to move it forward," said Norman Morse, president of OpenSFS. "OpenSFS and the Lustre community are deeply committed to this important open source technology. This is really what OpenSFS is all about, providing critical services to the Lustre community through collaboration on a common vision."

"Through this agreement, OpenSFS is making a deep structural investment in the community. This partnership with Whamcloud will ensure that the Lustre tree the community depends on will be well cared for," said Stephen Simms, OpenSFS Community Board Representative. "This agreement should be taken as a clear message. Lustre is not only here to stay, Lustre's best days are still ahead."

"Lustre has really hit its stride in the marketplace this past year and being able to ensure that the open source side of the equation is fully funded is great," said Brent Gorda, CEO of Whamcloud. "Lustre is worth the investment. We're excited to be working hand in hand with OpenSFS to continue to push Lustre forward."

Ongoing Lustre development requires fully tested and qualified Lustre feature releases with the very latest code. It is anticipated that Lustre feature releases will occur roughly every six months. These are distinct from Lustre maintenance releases, which are funded by support contracts.
