Citizen Outcry Against Bill C-30 Pushes Over Sixty MPs to Add Their Names to Pro-Privacy Listing (June 05, 2012)

WHAT: has just released a tool that displays the names of the over fifty Members of Parliament-nearly two-thirds of opposition party members-who have signed up as Pro-Privacy MPs, and taken a stand against warrantless online spying legislation in Canada (Bill C-30). By adding their names, these politicians have publicly committed to work "with Canadians to ensure that any Lawful Access legislation respects our privacy, security, and personal budgets."

While no Conservatives have signed up as Pro-Privacy MPs to date, three Conservative MPs- John Williamson, David Tilson, and Rob Anders-have spoken out against Bill C-30. hopes that the dissent demonstrated within Parliament and across Canada will encourage these and other Conservative MPs to stand with Canadians on this issue. Eight in ten Canadians oppose the collection of our private information without a warrant.


The campaign is supported by a group of public interest organizations, civil liberties groups, businesses, and concerned academics that have come together to encourage the government to reconsider "Lawful Access" legislation. The group points out that this type of legislation enables warrantless surveillance that is invasive, excessive and costly.

Over 135,000 people have signed the petition or sent a message to their MP at, and tens of thousands have joined the conversation through the Twitter hashtag #TellVicEverything. is a grassroots organization that safeguards the possibilities of the open and affordable Internet.
