Online News Association Reteams With NewsU for 2011 ONAvation Webinars(March 15, 2011)
WASHINGTON, DC -- (Marketwire) -- 03/15/11 -- The Online News Association (ONA), the world's largest membership organization of digital journalists, continues its partnership with The Poynter Institute's News University (NewsU) to deliver a series of webinars in 2011 that apply cutting-edge technology to journalism.
The four ONAvation webinars, which come at a steep discount to ONA members, combine the pioneering spirit of ONA's membership with NewsU's training expertise to show how developing technology can be used to deepen reporting, distribution and user engagement.
"Each year, we look for the best and brightest for the ONAvations series to show journalists what's coming next," said Jane McDonnell, ONA Executive Director. "Our three-year partnership with NewsU means these trainings are not only expertly produced but remain affordable."
"One of the biggest challenges journalists face is staying ahead the curve when it comes to using the latest tools and techniques," said Howard Finberg, director of interactive learning at The Poynter Institute. "This series provides the foundational skills individuals can apply to their own work."
- "HTML5 Essentials for Content Creators" launches the series on March 30. With browsers becoming more powerful and the next level of ubiquitous computing spreading to mobile, Luigi Montanez, Software Developer at Sunlight Foundation, will explore how HTML5 can structure and present content for the Web.
- Zach Brand, NPR's Senior Director of Technical Strategy and Operation, will present "Open APIs, Your Website and Your Content" on June 2, sharing his experience with the industry's first full content API, the tools and best practices of open content and the steps for producing cross-platforms such as iPhone, Android, Chrome and the iPad.
- On Aug. 2, Eric Ulken, Assistant Managing Editor of Digital for The Seattle Times, will present "Describing Your Content: Metadata and What It's Good For," showing how metadata helps users filter content effectively, the most useful types for news sites, how to add it to content painlessly and leverage existing metadata.
- "Mobile Apps: Expanding Your Reach in the Modern Mobile Era," Sept. 8, will guide news producers looking to begin exploration in mobile strategies. Shiny New Apps President and CEO Lynn Smith and Uptake.org Executive Director Jason Barnett will explore how mobile applications can help reach a target audience in revenue-generating ways by examining the low-cost strategies of mobile development.
Webinars are $9.95 for members and $27.95 for non-members. ONA members can pick up discount codes for the March 30 webinar at ONA's Member Discounts page and register at NewsU.org. To become a member of ONA, join at Journalists.org.
Archived ONAvation webinars from 2009 and 2010, including expert sessions on the semantic web, mobile technology and data visualization, are available at NewsU.org.
