On "One Day" Thousands of Children in Foster Care Find Their Forever Families

National Adoption Day Helps Build Awareness and New Families for Children in Foster Care on November 19 (November 16, 2011)

COLUMBUS, OH -- (Marketwire) -- 11/16/11 -- Thanksgiving will come early this year for many deserving children and families. All across the country, thousands of families will be created or grow on National Adoption Day. Set for November 19, 2011, National Adoption Day is the culmination of a year-round effort to raise awareness of the 107,000 children in foster care waiting for permanent and loving families. Each year, more than 350 communities in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Guam hold events to finalize the adoptions of children in foster care and honor their adoptive families. Events will range from courtroom adoptions to local celebrations. Since 2000, more than 35,000 children in foster care have had their adoptions finalized on National Adoption Day. This is truly a time of celebration!

New this year, the National Adoption Day Coalition created the "One Day Project." The One Day Project is designed to share stories of hope with the thousands of waiting children, giving them a glimpse into this life-changing day and shows them how it feels to find their forever families. This project gives hope to children in foster care and encourages others to adopt.

Background of National Adoption Day:

  • The success of National Adoption Day, which falls during National Adoption Awareness Month, belongs primarily to the parents who are so willing to open their hearts and homes to a child in need.
  • There is a network of caring and devoted people, such as adoption advocates, policymakers, judges and lawyers, who work diligently year-round to help bring children and parents together on this special day.
  • The coalition of national partners who sponsor National Adoption Day consists of: Freddie Mac Foundation, Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, Children's Action Network, The Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute and The Alliance for Children's Rights.

Among those joining the National Adoption Day celebration is White Collar actor and 2011 National Adoption Day spokesperson, Willie Garson. He adopted his now 10-year-old son, Nathen, from Los Angeles County foster care in 2010. "While there has been an increase in the number of foster care adoptions over the last five years, there are still far too many children waiting in foster care for families to adopt them," Garson said. "National Adoption Day is about raising awareness of the significant need to find adoptive families for the many children in foster care."

To hear more inspiring stories first-hand, watch this heartwarming video where Willie Garson opens up and shares his experiences:

It's important to know that many children in foster care move to different foster homes more than three times and are often separated from their siblings. Each year, nearly 28,000 of these youth leave the system when they turn 18 with no family to support them in the future. It is time we change these numbers.
