Olympus To Ship New Cameras

C-series models offer 5 megapixel resolutions By Dave Nagel
Olympus today announced two new models in its C-series line of digital cameras. The new models, the C-50 and C-5050, both offer 5 megapixel resolutions and are expected to be available next month.

The C-5050 offers full manual operation in a compact form, as well as automatic operation. It has an all-glass, f1.8 lens (with aspherical lens elements), built-in hot-shoe (in addition to the built-in flash) and support for three different media standards--xD-Picture Card, SmartMedia and Compact Flash (Type I or II). It can also hold two memory cards simultaneously. Other features include:

  • A multi-position LCD;
  • Controls for aperture priority, shutter priority and full manual operation;
  • Auto-Connect USB;
  • Digital ESP multi-pattern and spot metering;
  • Adjustable white balance;
  • Multiple flash settings, including slow sync flash;
  • Auto bracketing and exposure compensation;
  • Noise reduction;
  • Ability to capture QuickTime video and sound.



The C-5050 Zoom will be available in October for $799.

The other new model, the C-50 Zoom, is a more compact model that also offers a 5 megapixel resolution. It has a 3x optical zoom lens (all glass with aspherical elements) and is designed for automated shooting, though it also offers manual control. Features include:

  • 3x optical and 4x digital zoom, equivalent zoom range of 38 mm to 114 mm;
  • Shutter speeds from 8 seconds to 1/1000 second;
  • 1.5-inch color LCD display;
  • Auto-Connect USB;
  • Digital ESP multi-pattern and spot metering;
  • Adjustable white balance;
  • Multiple flash settings, including slow sync flash;
  • Auto bracketing and exposure compensatio;
  • Built- in flash with six settings;
  • bility to capture QuickTime video and sound.


The C-50 Zoom will also be available in October and will include a USB cable, AV cable, strap, Li-ION battery and charger, remote control, software and 32 MB xD-Picture Card. It will sell for $599.
