Ohio hillside that had rockslide will be monitored

Ohio hillside at risk of another rockslide; boulder crushed cars, damaged home earlier in week By The Associated Press

ATHENS, Ohio (AP) ' Officials say there's potential for another rockslide along a southeast Ohio hillside where a boulder weighing roughly 100 tons crushed a car and damaged a home, utility poles, a water line and other vehicles.

The Athens Messenger reports ( ) the city's Deputy Service-Safety Director Ron Lucas said Thursday that crews don't believe there is an immediate threat. The family who lives in the damaged home has been allowed to return.

Lucas says the Ohio Department of Transportation helped assess the hillside's integrity, and the city has installed "monitoring pins" that will be measured periodically to determine if there's movement.

No one was hurt when the boulder, about 25-feet in diameter, crashed down Tuesday night.

Crews began removing the boulder Thursday by breaking it up with excavating equipment.
