OWC Ships G4 Upgrade

Company also offers new portable FireWire drive By Dave Nagel
Other World Computing (OWC) has started shipping a new model in its line of G4 processor upgrades. The latest offers 1.467 GHz processor speeds. OWC has also started shipping two new 80 GB portable FireWire and combo FireWire/USB 2.0 hard drives.

OWC's new Mercury Extreme G4 upgrade runs at clock speeds of 1.467 GHz (though it's based on a 1.25 GHz chip) and uses the new Motorola PowerPC G4 7455B processor with a 256 KB 1:1 level-2 cache on chip and 2 MB SPD or DDR level-3 cache. The unit requires no additional drivers and supports G4 models from Sawtooth (AGP Graphics) to Quicksilver running Mac OS 9 or Mac OS X. It's available now for $429.99.

OWC has also launched two new models in its Mercury On the Go line of external portable drives. Both offer an 80 GB, 5400 RPM mechanism with an 8 MB data buffer. The FireWire model includes two FireWire ports (one powered, one unpowered) and is available for $349.97. The other model offers a combination of FireWire and USB 2.0 ports and is available for $359.97. Both weigh in at 11 ounces and measure 3.5" x 5.5" x 1". The units include all cables and an AC adapter, though they can operate through bus power as well.
