Not a Number Ships Blender 2.20 at SIGGRAPH(August 20, 2001)
Blender 2.20 is a fully integrated 3D creation suite featuring a versatile animation system, contemporary modelling principles, an advanced rendering engine, character animation tools, an editor for post-production and tools for creating and playback of real-time interactive 3D. The Blender Creator is the only 3D creation software integrating a real-time game engine for interactive editing of real-time content.
Its 1.5 MB file size makes for quick and easy downloading, while its compatibility with OpenGL eliminates the need for costly high-end graphics machines. Blender runs on most PC and workstation operating systems, including all Windows flavours, Linux, FreeBSD, Sun, SGI and BeOS. More details are included in the background note.
NaN has also released details of Blender PlayerTools aimed at media professionals who wish to create and publish interactive 3D content. Priced at $295, and available in September, Blender PlayerTools will provide a valuable revenue stream to the company, as it continues to develop and expand its services to its active community.
Features of Blender PlayerTools include:
File Compression – enabling Blender files to be reduced to 30% of their normal size for efficient download and transportation, File Locking – enabling Blender files to become read-only and non-editable, and Web Plug-in Integration – which will allow for playback of Blender content without NaN defined branding. Blender PlayerTools also provides the permission to distribute and commercially apply the stand-alone player and web plug-in.
Other features in this release include:
- Character Animation
Based on a flexible ‘Armature’ system, the Blender Creator now offers a character animation toolset for both linear and non-linear animation that makes use of inverse kinematics and constraints
- Subdivision Surfaces
Fully integrated mesh subdivision surfaces that enable easily controlled smooth modelling.
- Scene Overlays
Enabling the use of overlays with game scores, information sharing among different scenes, etc., essential for developing multi-level games and rich interactive media.
Aimed at individual media professionals, and small or medium sized digital media companies, this new product will considerably strengthen the position of Blender in the world of 3D content creation, enabling users to commercially exploit their designs easily.
To accompany the release of Blender PlayerTools, NaN has also announced the release of the Blender Web Plug-in, which provides users the opportunity to view and use interactive 3D content for the web. The Blender Web Plug-in is a powerful download that provides more functionality than competitor products due to the incorporation of a full-featured game engine. Available free as a download from the Blender web site (www.blender.nl), the Web Plug-in is an essential element in the suite of Blender products that aim to "democratise 3D content creation."
