Northern Calif. protest to be kicked off siteProtesters in Calif.'s agricultural heartland to be ejected soon from site as permit expires
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) ' Authorities are preparing to evict a small group of Occupy Wall Street protesters who have been camped next to a Northern California courthouse for 20 days.
By day, the group outside the Fresno County courthouse numbers a dozen who hold signs or play guitars. In the evening, it swells to about 30 people who spend the night there.
Protest spokesman Ruben Verdugo says the county had so far been lenient with the encampment.
But county officials handed them a notice Friday that says the protesters' permit is expiring midnight Monday. It says the demonstrators face $500 fines if they remain.
Verdugo says the group had complied with officials' request not to erect tents on the site, so he was surprised by the order.
The Fresno County attorney's office didn't immediately return a call for comment.
