Norfolk-Based Studio Center Changes Hands

Sunshine Wireless to purchase Studio Center from Warren Miller (July 15, 2004)

After 38 years and over 300,000 commercials the Norfolk-based Studio Center changes hands. William ?Woody Prettyman, who has owned and managed radio stations in several east coast markets, has joined forces with Sunshine Wireless, Inc. to purchase Studio Center from Warren Miller. Sunshine Wireless Co., Inc. has owned and operated radio stations in several markets including WFOG and WPTE in Norfolk. Currently, Sunshine owns controlling interest of Excelsior Radio Networks.

Studio Center, founded 38 years ago by Mr. Miller has grown to the nations number one volume production house. Producing over 10,000 commercials annually for clients such as A&E, AOL, BMW, Blockbuster Video, Bud Light, the Cartoon Network, Dominos, GEICO, GE, HGTV, Hardees, Heineken, the History Channel, Lowes, McDonalds, MTV, NASA, NASCAR, PBS, Pepsi, Starbucks, Subway, Victorias Secret and The Washington Post.

Studio Center has received over 800 awards over the last four decades, including Local, Regional and National Addys, Tellys, Clios, Silver Microphones and even a Grammy Award.

The largest deal in Studio Center history was completed earlier this year with communications giant AOL. Over 80,000 voice files were recorded by Studio Center talent in English, Spanish and French for use by AOL in the United States, Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom and France.

Studio Center is comprised of 14 studios in three cities, Norfolk, Las Vegas and Memphis. Studio Center produces Radio and TV commercial audio, plus audio for documentaries, CD-ROMS, in-flight entertainment, computer games, toys, web sites, corporate training programs and in-store announcements for clients in all 50 states and 23 countries around the world.

The three voice talents originally signed by Studio Center, Marv Henry, Lee Lively and Andy Roberts, are still on the roster 38 years later and do voice-overs almost every day. Isaac Hayes records his lines as ?Chef for South Park at Studio Center Memphis. Juice Newton and Emmy Lou Harris sang jingles at Studio Center. George Grove of Kingston Trio was the first Music Director. Current Studio Center Music Director, Peter Pope, just succeeded the late Bill Deal as lead singer of the Rhondels. Other celebrities include George Carlin, Jerry Lewis, Robin Williams, David Brenner, Carrot Top and Charlie Sheen.
