Non-Profit Group of Fortune 500 CIOs Launches Interactive Book on Running IT as a BusinessTechnology Business Management Council Book Offers Best Practices for Running IT as a Business; Interactive TBM Index Provides Industry-Validated IT Benchmarks (July 23, 2012)
BELLEVUE, WA -- (Marketwire) -- 07/23/12 -- The Technology Business Management Council (TBM Council), a non-profit group of Fortune 500 leaders dedicated to helping CIOs run IT as a business, today announced the availability of an interactive book titled, "Technology Business Management: How Innovative Technology Leaders Apply Business Acumen to Drive Value." Each chapter educates readers on how innovative IT leaders are applying technology business management in their organizations. The TBM Book was written by the TBM Council including board members such as the CIOs of DIRECTV, Facebook, First American, Cox Enterprises, T-Mobile and Xerox. The first chapter is available today for download online or in the iTunes Bookstore. Given that technology spend is now one of the biggest line items in the corporate budget, the TBM Book aims to help companies manage the finances and business of IT.
The TBM Book helps technology leaders maximize the business impact of every dollar invested in technology, with the goal of reinforcing IT as a strategic business asset. The book provides a wealth of resources such as informative videos, infographics and best practices that readers can use to build technology business management into a professional and recognized discipline in their own organizations. Technology leaders are invited to participate in an interactive survey that measures how they improve value by applying business acumen to decision making. The aggregate results will be shared and distributed as an industry-first benchmark, called the TBM Index, which can be used by readers to compare and assess their own application of business principles against their peers.
"In my own role as CIO and through talking with my peers, I know the transformation from technology to business-focused leader can be a struggle for even the most experienced of us," said Erez Yarkoni, TBM Council board member and CIO at T-Mobile. "Through the TBM Council, book and TBM Index, we want others to learn from our mistakes and triumphs. We want the book to be viewed as a go-to resource of IT insights and useful best practices that help the average CIO begin tearing down the walls between IT and the rest of the business."
"Simply put, the TBM Council believes that traditional approaches to managing IT are no longer adequate -- let alone applicable -- to keep up with new business models that innovations like cloud computing and mobile are enabling," said Chris Pick, president of the TBM Council. "The TBM Book contains up-to-date knowledge from the best and brightest minds in technology leadership, and symbolizes the pivotal shift that all of us in IT and non-IT roles are experiencing today."
The book is available for download on an iPad or online, with the ability for readers to access new chapters as they are released in coming months. In the first chapter, "The New Business Model of IT and the Forces Shaping It," the TBM Council discusses the Technology Business Management framework and principles, and demonstrates why it is essential to helping CIOs and IT effectively manage the business of IT. Each book chapter is a product of interviews with, input from and reviews by dozens of thought-leading CIOs and other C-level business executives that make up the TBM Council.
