Noise Industries FX Factory Pro, Volumetrix, and SugarFX

Updates to popular FXPlug plug-ins By Kevin McAuliffe

Being not only an editor, but a writer as well, I not only have to keep on top of everything in the editing suite, but I have to keep on top of everything in the Post Production world for the articles I write, which can be daunting, needless to say. With all the plug-in packages I look at, there are updates that (seem to) happen on almost a regular basis, so I thought that for this article I would take a look at recent upgrades to Noise Industries' products and partner products including FX Factory Pro, SugarFX, Motype and Volumetrix, as well as throwing in a quick look at Industrial Revolution's brand new plug-in known as ParticleMetrix.
FX Factory Pro
For me, FX Factory Pro (FXFP) is a must have effects package for two reasons. First, and most importantly, it has an awesome set of effects included with the core version of the software (2.0), but if you don't stay on top of the updates that NI rolls out for it, you are missing out on some really great effects. NI does something a little different from everyone else when it comes to point updates to their software. Not only are there bug fixes to the software, but there are new effects added with each update. Would you believe it if I told you that since version 2.0 there has been eight (yes, eight) updates to FXFP, and included in that update are these major enhancements to the core program including:

  • High Precision Output Clamping
  • Thumbnail Previews
  • License Backup and Transfer
  • Network Browser

The biggest and best new enhancements to the core FXFP application is the ability to use all your FXFP plug-ins in Adobe's After Effects CS3/4 for free. Yes, FREE! In version 2.0.4 of FXFP, this feature was added, and using the effects in After Effects required no extra work for the user. Simply install the update, and you're ready to go!

Also, as I had mentioned before, with the point updates comes a staggering twenty-five new effects including:

Funhouse Mirror
Clone Pro
Three Color Gradient
Cell Phone Browser
Color Accent
Color Fill
Mask from Color
Replace Range
Emboss (Image and Text)
Frame Info
Soften Frame
Blur Two Axes
Blur Dissolve
Random Close-Up
Random Crop
Block Dissolve
Banding-free Gradient
PDF Animator
Alpha Merger
Perlin Noise
Organic Dissolve
Spot light (Multiple)

The best part about all these updates is that they are included in 2.0.8, so don't feel as though you need to download each update separately. If you own FXFP, and haven't updated yet, do it now, if you don't have FXFP, what are you waiting for, head over to to download a free demo.
The newest addition to SUGARfx is their HUD effect. HUD, short for Head's Up Display, gives your footage a very unique look. HUD is broken down into three individual "looks" including "Binoculars" which gives you cool looks from the standard "cutout" looks to the "futuristic army" look.

"Target", which lets you focus in on something specific on the screen to draw attention to.

And finally "OSD (On-Screen Display), which simulates a camera's viewfinder on your screen.

The best part about this new pack is that the looks can really be customized to look very different from each other. SugarFX HUD is available for $59 US at
