Nick Clegg's Youth Jobs Scheme Needs Reinventing, Says Perspective(June 08, 2012)
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 06/08/12 -- Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg's youth contract scheme has come under criticism for being 'bureaucratic and inefficient'. Leading education tracking software provider Perspective believes more needs to be done to reverse the ill-performing youth contract to help reverse the growing trend of youth unemployment.
The Deputy Prime Minister established the youth contract in April 2012 to tackle the UK's growing youth unemployment crisis through offering businesses more than GBP 2,000 for every young person they take on. However, the bureaucratic nature of the scheme means it overlaps with 33 other Government funding schemes when it comes to helping to find work. Research was recently conducted by City and Guilds which found there to be a "serious danger" of Britain's one million unemployed youths becoming "further disengaged" due to the bureaucracy of the youth contract.
The Youth Contract aimed to offer businesses that took on unemployed under 25s with 160,000 wage incentives worth up to GBP 2,275. Further to this, an extra 250,000 work experience places would be created over the next three years, with every 18 to 24 year-old JSA claimant who wanted one would be able to take up a placement.
Paul Davis, managing director of student tracking software provider Perspective, commented: "More needs to be done to ensure the youth contract and other youth training and employment schemes are being run effectively. At a time when work is hard to come by, training and work providers must make a valid effort to help the UK's unemployed youth and encourage training and employment where possible."
