Next Generation Self-Backing RAID 5 Adds USB3 Connectivity

  (September 29, 2011)

Reno, Nevada (PRWEB) September 29, 2011

Highly Reliable Systems announced that they are shipping new versions of their FirstRAID Direct Attached Storage (DAS) hardware that includes faster self-replication. Available in four models ranging from 2TB to 12TB, the units feature five drives in the main storage array along with a removable drive below for a byte by byte copy of the main storage array that can be removed and taken off-site.

Tom Hoops, VP of Engineering says, The storage system includes an integrated RAID controller with Hot-Spare drives in case of failure. Hoops further states, The FirstRAID also has an integrated controller that performs a byte by byte mirror of the main storage array to a removable drive protected in our enclosed media tray to be taken off-site for disaster recovery. The FirstRAID allows you to connect to a host using either eSATA or USB3. The systems are intended for high speed reliable backup and can be easily moved among servers. Hoops further comments the advantages of the storage system is that no Host RAID Adapter or software is needed for RAID operations because it is already integrated into the FirstRAID With eSATA and USB3 connection options data typically moves faster than Gigabit Ethernet, roughly up to 400 Gigabytes per hour.

Unique features of the new generation system are: hot spare drives with automatic failover, and a fourfold increase in mirroring speed.

By swapping the removable tray, additional copies of the data can be made without user intervention or software, making the system self backing. Two models with larger arrays (8TB or 12TB) are available for those who need more space and do not require the self backup mirroring feature.

Windows software is provided for monitoring and managing array health, a new feature on this system. The removable media interchanges with other products by the company, including their low cost $225 USB3.0 SlimLine enclosure.

The FirstRAID works well with: Windows, Linux, Mac, and UNIX systems.

Pricing on the 2TB and 3TB RAID5 models including populated hot spare drives starts at $1559 MSRP. 12TB models are $2389 MSRP.
