News-Press and Gazette Picks Avid For Digital TransitionAvid to deliver all-digital solutions for KTVZ-TV, KVIA-TV and KESQ-TV (December 06, 2004)
Avid Technology, Inc. today announced that News-Press and Gazette Broadcasting Company -- the owner of nine television and cable stations -- has purchased Avid end-to-end digital broadcast production solutions for three news-centric stations. The all-digital production environments are planned for News-Press and Gazette Broadcasting stations KTVZ, Bend, OR; KVIA, El Paso, TX; and KESQ, Palm Desert, CA. All three stations will implement an Avid Unity LANshare for News shared-media network to manage the simultaneous ingest, edit, and output functions in their new, tapeless facilities. The sale also includes Avid NewsCutter XP systems with Avid Mojo feature for editing and Avid AirSpeed servers for ingest and playout.
"With the need to modernize our news operations, we knew it would be important to find a partner with a proven track record in planning, building and implementing digital end-to-end broadcast production workflows," said Bob Allen, executive vice president and general manager of Gulf-California Broadcast Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of News-Press and Gazette. "As a smaller station group, we felt that Avid understood the News-Press and Gazette business model better than anyone else. The Avid team worked with us to deliver cost-effective, efficient digital solutions."
David Schleifer, vice president of Avid Broadcast and Workgroups, said, "Avid's digital nonlinear production systems for news have unique characteristics. They allow us to affordably scale and meet the requirements of any news operation -- regardless of size -- and do not force stations to compromise on critical workflow issues. We are delighted that News-Press and Gazette Broadcasting has chosen Avid as its partner to transition several of its stations into the digital age."
In addition to deploying Avid end-to-end solutions at KVIA, KESQ and KTVZ, News-Press and Gazette will also use the new workflows to create content and produce segments for English and Spanish news programming at three additional stations: KDFX, KUNA and KCWB, all in Palm Springs, CA. Beyond these six stations, the remaining News-Press and Gazette Broadcasting stations include KECY, KESE, and KWUB all in Yuma, AZ. News-Press and Gazette Broadcasting is a subsidiary of St. Joseph News-Press and Gazette Company headquartered in St. Joseph, Missouri.
