New Tech Infosystems Shadow 2.0

A low-cost back up solution for Mac and Windows By Don Lee

NTI Shadow 2.0Backing up your computers data is probably the most important thing you can do but most people continue to operate without a backup figuring that nothing will ever happen to them. Then the system mysteriously fails to boot up and now youre in a panic that youre about to lose all of your important data. Without a backup of your hard drive, your precious data could be lost forever or you can pay a recovery service hundreds of dollars to save your files.

With New Tech Infosystems Shadow 2.0, backing up your computers data is simple and constantly updated on its own. When you consider the cheap prices for internal hard drives these days, you can install an extra drive into your computer and run Shadow to protect your precious files. You can also choose to back up your files to a specific directory and burn that directory onto rewritable DVDs although this may take more time and effort. When you consider how much time it takes to recover from a hard drive crash, the amount of effort needed to run Shadow is a heck of a lot easier.

Protecting Your Data
To test Shadow 2.0, I installed a 40GB formatted hard drive to work as a slave drive. I then created a folder called ?C Drive Backup on it. I launched Shadow 2.0 and I was immediately prompted to select the folders I wanted to back up. After making a few selections such as My Documents folder, I clicked the Next button to select where I wanted the data to be backed up. It was there that I selected the ?C Drive Backup folder on my systems slave drive.

After selecting the ?C Drive Backup folder on the slave drive to be the target of the back up, I then continued on to step three which prompted me on how I wanted the back up to function. It gave me the option of selecting how to handle revisions (I chose unlimited revisions) and gave me the option of narrowing down the types of files I wanted backed up using a filter. The filter covers all the basic file types such as audio files (mp3, wav), picture (jpg, tif, bmp), video (mov, mpg, avi) and document files (doc, xls, pdf) and there was an option for no filtering if you wanted Shadow to back up everything in the specified locations. I chose the no folter option because I wanted everything in those folders to be captured.

After completing the five-step process, you will now see a listing of your specified directory paths in Shadows main textbox. Just select the list and press the Start Now button. This will begin your first back up of your hard drive locations that you specified. After this initial back up is completed, then the program will take over from there and begin to execute back ups in the timeframe you set up.  I chose a constant back up because I am a heavy computer user and I make plenty of file changes. Even with the program working in the background, I found no noticeable slowdown in my computers performance (AMD Athlon XP 1800 1.53GHz on Windows 2000) even when running other applications.

When I checked the slave drive for the ?C Drive Backup folders contents, I compared them to the areas I wanted backed up and it worked perfectly. Even my Outlook Express email was backed up. I was very surprised by the simplicity of the program but even more by the programs ability to work in the background and not use up my systems resources.

The Final Word
I found that Shadow 2.0 to be an excellent low-cost back up utility for Mac OSX and Windows operating systems. The programs interface is very easy to understand and the five-step setup process will have your precious files saved for that moment you need them the most. By following through on the five step configuration process, you should have your vital files backed up in a matter of minutes and it will continue to monitor your system for changes as you specify.

Although I used an extra hard drive to back up my data, thats not a necessity. You can back up your data to a folder on your current primary hard drive and the burn that onto a DVD rewritable disc instead. This way you can prevent corrupt versions from being copied over to your back up and you can protect vital data from any type of system failure. Since I had Shadow set to constantly monitor my folders for changes, it kept everything up to date to the very second. I wish I had this program a couple of weeks ago when my PC was acting up. To save my data then, I had to copy it over to my other computer then copy everything back. With Shadow 2.0, keeping a back up copy of all my data is as easy as pressing the power button. Yes, it is that easy. Spend a few bucks now and protect your precious data with just a few mouse clicks. Youll be happy you did the next time your system fails to boot.

Shadow 2.0 is now available for Macintosh OSX and Windows XP/2000 operating systems. You can click HERE to purchase a downloadable version of Shadow 2.0 for Windows XP/2000. You can click HERE to purchase the Macintosh OSX version of Shadow 2.0.
