New SF sheriff vows to fight criminal chargesNew San Francisco sheriff says he plans to fight charges he abused wife, vows to keep office
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ' San Francisco's newly elected sheriff is denying allegations he abused his wife and is vowing to remain in office while he fights the charges.
Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi (meer-kah-REEM'-ee) spoke to a gaggle of reporters camped outside his office Friday afternoon, shortly after the San Francisco district attorney announced he was charging the former county supervisor with three misdemeanor counts alleging he bruised his wife's arm on New Year's Eve.
If convicted, the sheriff would be barred from carrying a gun.
Mirkarimi was sworn into office Sunday after winning the November election to replace long-time incumbent Michael Hennessey. Mirkarimi served the previous seven years as a county supervisor.
