New Book The Harvey Milk Interviews Reveals Gay Hero's Strategies(February 17, 2012)
SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 02/17/12 -- LGBT rights hero Harvey Milk's dreams and strategies are revealed in a forthcoming book, The Harvey Milk Interviews: In His Own Words, scheduled to arrive in bookstores May 1.
The Harvey Milk Interviews provides 39 unrehearsed conversations with Milk, spanning his political career from Milk's first days as an unskilled candidate to shortly before his assassination. They include transcripts from three famous debates in which Milk and State Senator John Briggs brawl over the notorious Proposition 6 Briggs Initiative.
Although these interviews include much of significance which is preserved nowhere else, several have never been published anywhere, and none has ever appeared in a book. For more than a third of a century, only a few dedicated scholars have seen them.
The best interviews also expose Milk's personal qualities. Readers gain a first-hand connection with his sense of humor, anger over injustice, and love of dramatic confrontation.
The Harvey Milk Interviews: In His Own Words will be a groundbreaking treasure trove for anyone wanting a deeper understanding of who Harvey Milk was and how he changed the world.
Who Was Harvey Milk?
Harvey Milk (1930-1978) was named "one of the 100 most important people of the twentieth century" by Time Magazine. Milk was the first openly gay person elected to office in California. In spite of death threats, he supported several human rights, labor, environmental, and free speech initiatives across North America. He was portrayed by Sean Penn in the movie Milk, and has been the subject of books, plays, an opera, and the Academy Award-winning documentary The Times of Harvey Milk. President Obama awarded Harvey Milk the Medal of Freedom, America's highest civilian honor.
