New AT&T Pricing is a Big Opportunity for Internet Service Providers(June 03, 2010)
LUND, SWEDEN -- (Marketwire) -- 06/03/10 -- AT&T yesterday announced new wireless data plans that will make mobile data more affordable for more people. But this new usage based pricing will also drive up the cost for many users; the cheapest plan costs $15 per month and includes only 200 MB of mobile data. If customers exceed the 200 MB, they will be billed an additional $15 for another 200 MB of data.
"Mobile operators are waking up to the reality that cellular data is a scarce resource that has to be priced on a usage basis. This will create a big opportunity for Internet service providers. Using Wi-Fi over IP they can offer a low cost flat rate mobile subscription that ties in perfectly with a smartphone, works in most places and keeps down the subscriber's cellular data bill" said Bjorn Smedman, CEO of Anyfi Networks, a Swedish start-up developing Wi-Fi over IP technology.
Wi-Fi over IP is similar to Voice over IP. It makes it possible to have access to the same Wi-Fi network wherever you are, as long as there is a wireless router nearby and the Internet service provider has allowed it to be used for the purpose.
"We are negotiating with operators to enable the service in millions of cable modems" said Bjorn Smedman. "Fixed-line broadband operators have a lot of spare capacity in parts of their networks. With our technology this spare capacity can be repackaged as flat rate mobile Wi-Fi data plans, and as of yesterday there are 10 million iPhone users that can save $15 a month on their AT&T bill. That's already a billion dollar opportunity, and this is only the beginning."
Analysts predict strong growth in the wireless data market over the next few years, driven by data hungry Wi-Fi capable devices like the iPhone and iPad. If this small start-up is right Internet service providers could be set to capture a large piece of that growing pie.
