New 3D Collaboration Tool Strengthens Oracle Product Development SolutionWeb-based, 3D CAD Visualization Designed to Cut, Product Design Costs, Reduce Development Cycle Time, and Improve Innovation (January 16, 2002)
In order to reduce costs, improve quality and accelerate time-to-market, companies need to implement a global, collaborative product development strategy. However, valuable information has been typically locked in proprietary CAD formats or departmental Product Data Management (PDM) systems in the form of 3D geometric models, product structures, drawings, and manufacturing information. By making this information available for viewing and collaboration with their customers and supply chain partners, companies can improve profitability, efficiency and productivity.
According to Kevin O'Marah in the AMR Research Alert on Supply Chain Management, January 4, 2002, "[Oracle CADView-3D] is of great interest to construction and engineering firms that need accuracy and speed in solving design problems in the field. Also valuable is the ability to work with suppliers for major parts or assemblies without sharing potentially competitive information in the CAD drawing. There is no download, so no loss of control."
A significant enhancement to the Oracle E-Business Suite, Oracle CADView-3D augments Oracle's Product Development Exchange by providing a secure, collaborative environment that enables employees across the extended enterprise, supply chain and customer base to collaborate. Oracle CADView-3D helps companies reduce product development costs by reducing the need for travel and face-to-face meetings; reduce product development cycle times and costly late cycle design changes by enabling cross department and multi-company collaboration sessions; improve component reuse through visualization and advanced parametric search of product information; and improve innovation and knowledge exchange through closed-loop concurrent product development processes.
"Oracle CADView-3D is the first tool that really enables multi-company design reviews by addressing security for intellectual property," said Kurt Robson, vice president, Oracle Corp. "Due to its patented streaming technology, Oracle CADView-3D facilitates multi-user design reviews across firewalls without transferring the entire model to any user's desktop. More design reviews with customers and partners can immediately translates into better products and faster time to market."
In October 2001, Oracle acquired the patents and intellectual property for the Envision-i CAD viewing tool from Assentive Solutions, Inc. (formerly known as i-Engineer and Vuent). Oracle CADView-3D is key to bridging the gap between Oracle E-Business Suite and CAD tools. Oracle CADView-3D is available immediately on a global basis either as a stand-alone product or integrated with Oracle Product Development Exchange.
The Oracle E-Business Suite is the industry's first integrated suite of Internet business applications that automates critical business processes across both front and back office operations. The Oracle E-Business Suite can streamline every area of a business -- marketing, sales, service, contracts, order management, product design, procurement, supply chain, manufacturing, financials, projects, human resources and professional services automation. In 2001, Oracle E-Business Suite applications were implemented by more than 1,100 companies around the world.
Since its initial introduction, Oracle has delivered several releases of E-Business Suite enhancements, resulting in a mature, function-rich set of applications. Oracle E-Business Suite also offers customers unprecedented choice and flexibility in implementing business applications; its open architecture and single data model allow applications to be deployed as individual modules, business flows, or as an entire integrated suite. The Oracle E-Business Suite is offered as traditional software on CD ROMs or as an online service.
