Naxos of America Launches DSO Live, Dreyer Gaido and Network for Distribution in June

(June 04, 2012)

FRANKLIN, TN -- (Marketwire) -- 06/04/12 -- In June, Naxos of America furthers its distribution partnerships with American orchestras and their wide array of live recordings with the launch of DSO Live, Dallas Symphony Orchestra's new in-house label. Naxos of America is also welcoming the acclaimed German label Dreyer Gaido and world music label Network to its family of distributed labels.

DSO Live is dedicated to preserving and distributing performances by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra conducted by Music Director Jaap van Zweden, recorded in the highly acclaimed acoustics of the Meyerson Symphony Center's Eugene McDermott Concert Hall. The newest release from the DSO Live label will be the live recording of the world premiere performance of Steven Stucky's "August 4, 1964." The piece is a secular oratorio commissioned for the 100th anniversary of Lyndon Baines Johnson's birth. The work centers on the day that two key issues in Johnson's Presidency converged: the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights movement. On that day President Johnson and Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara decided to bomb North Vietnam, escalating the Vietnam conflict, and the bodies of three slain civil rights workers were discovered in Mississippi. Gene Scheer's libretto juxtaposes these events and uses White House telephone tapes, letters from the slain civil rights workers and their mothers, speeches by President Johnson, and other contemporary sources for the majority of his text.

Dreyer Gaido, based in Münster, Germany, and founded in 2001 by Michael Dreyer and Hugo Germán Gaido, has acquired an outstanding reputation in the classic scene during the last years doing excellent productions of classical music. The label also launched a new series, Eastern Voices, which features some of the most renowned Middle East artists such as Ibrahim Keivo and Alim Qasimov, who was called "one of the greatest singers alive" by the New York Times.

Conceived 30 years ago as a project in a resistant public sphere, Network focused on social conflicts which today have become even more potent: unemployment and business crises, nuclear power and the disposal of atomic waste, youth subcultures in search of direction, and even xenophobia. The label's musical expeditions and recording trips have frequented more than 80 countries. The result is a wide and resonant kaleidoscope of the most diverse musical cultures on our planet.
