Updates gain Mac OS X and RTAS support By Dave Nagel
Native Instruments has released new versions of two of its audio applications, Kontakt and Battery. The new versions both add support for Mac OS X and RTAS, as well as additional features. The Battery update is available now for Mac OS X. The Kontakt update is available now for Ma cOS X and Windows.

Kontakt is a sampler that supports up to 256 stereo voices, 16-part multitimbral and 32 outputs per plugin, 16 per standalone instance. It offers real-time granular time-stretching and resynthesis; drag and drop sample management; graphical display for sample mapping and setting of key ranges; integrated EQ, delay, reverb and waveshaper effects; 17 different filter types; tempo-synced step-modulators, LFOs and multi-stage envelopes; integrated loop editor with waveform display; and support for eight loop points. The new version of Kontakt (1.5) adds support for Mac OS X, as well as new support for additional interfaces, including Audio Units and RTAS on Mac OS X and RTAS on Windows. It also includes a new, integrated Beat Machine for synchronizing drum loops to the host sequencer. (It also supports the REX format for pre-sliced loops.) Other new features include:

  • Time stretching via Time Machine II;
  • Tempo synchronization of loops;
  • Accelerated sample analysis;
  • New import formats (REX, EXS MK II, Samplecell, Kompakt and Intakt);
  • VST automation;
  • Drag and drop via the Finder.

The new Battery update also adds support for Mac OS X, Audio Units and RTAS. (A separate RTAS plugin for Windows is forthcoming.) Battery is a sampler designed for percussion programming. The new version (version number not available at press time) also supports Core Audio and Core MIDI, as well as VST 2. In addition, it's also been brought up to speed to gain compatibility with the latest versions of third-party sequencers on Mac OS X, such as Digidesign's Pro Tools (via RTAS), Emagic's Logic (via Audio Units), MOTU's Digital Performer 4.1 (via Audio Units) and Steinberg's Cubase SX and Nuendo via VST 2.

The new versions of Kontakt and Battery are available now for a $29 upgrade fee each (via direct download). Kontakt 1.5 is available free for those who purchased the software after Aug. 1. The Battery update is available as a free update for those who purchased the software after Oct. 1. For more information, visit http://www.nativeinstruments.de.
