NYPD officers rescue women from river and rooftopNYPD officers rescue 1 woman from river, another from high-rise rooftop in same day
NEW YORK (AP) ' It's been a day of dramatic rescues for the New York Police Department.
Police say officers plunged into the Hudson River Saturday to retrieve one woman and pulled another to safety from the edge of a high-rise roof where she was perched with a kitchen knife.
Detectives Darren McNamara and Henry Medina went into the river around 4:30 p.m. to help a 59-year-old woman who apparently jumped into the water off Harlem. Sgt. Raymond Smith and Detective Anthony Selvaggi (selh-VAH'-jee) helped pull her up a ladder.
Around the same time, Officers Christopher Cruzado (croo-ZAH'-doh) and Jose Rivera were on top of a roughly 20-story apartment building in East Harlem. They hoisted a 40-year-old woman over a security fence she had scaled to get the roof's ledge.
