NYPD officer convicted of sex assaultNYPD officer convicted of sex assault; jurors continue to deliberate on rape charge
NEW YORK (AP) ' An off-duty New York City police officer has been convicted of grabbing a schoolteacher off a street and sexually assaulting her.
Jurors found Michael Pena guilty Tuesday of criminal sex act and some counts of predatory sexual assault.
The judge told the jurors to keep deliberating on some unresolved counts, including rape.
The predatory assault charge carries the potential for life in prison.
Pena admits sexually attacking the woman but says he didn't have intercourse with her during the August assault.
The woman testified that Pena ordered her into a courtyard and threatened to shoot her in the face if she resisted.
The defense said the victim was in such "abject terror" that she was mistaken about the extent of what happened.
