NYC seniors keep fit with synchronized swimming

In sync: NYC synchronized swimming team features amateur athletes ages 62 to 100 By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Senior citizens in New York City are staying fit and keeping young, thanks to one of the more unconventional team sports synchronized swimming.

The Harlem Honeys and Bears team welcomes people ages 50 and over. The current members range in age from 62 to 100.

The team has 41 members, both men and women.

Despite their walkers and wheelchairs, arthritis and asthma, the swimmers practice up to three times a week.

On Monday, they performed their "Pyramid" routine in a pool at Thomas Jefferson Park in East Harlem for an impressed crowd of city officials and visitors.

The group began in 1979 with fewer than a dozen members.
