NY immigrant advocates criticize Border Patrol

NY immigrant advocates, civil liberties group allege Border Patrol abuses of authority By The Associated Press

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) ' Immigrant rights advocates and the New York Civil Liberties Union have released a report accusing the Border Patrol in upstate New York of abusing its authority by questioning train and bus passengers about their citizenship.

Border Patrol also is faulted for targeting people in towns miles away from any international crossing.

The agency says it constantly adjusts strategies to improve effectiveness.

Using a Freedom of Information request, the advocates analyzed arrests by Rochester-based agents from 2006 to 2009. They counted 2,743 arrests by agents' routinely boarding trains and buses far from the border. Most of the border crossers had been in the country more than a year.

The Associated Press reported last month that Border Patrol has recently stopped routine checks in favor of intelligence-led checks.
