NEC Delivers STARUS Digital Cinema System to Theatres

Provides fully redundant digital solutions with high-speed connectivity (October 18, 2004)

NEC Solutions (America), Inc., a premier provider of integrated solutions for the Connected Enterprise in North America, today announced the delivery of the NEC STARUS Digital Cinema system that includes a line of STAR*Beam DLP projectors; STAR*Cor Multiplex servers and software; and STAR*Show screen servers. The multiplex-wide digital cinema system deployment is the first and only complete solution available from a single vendor for theatres.

"NEC continues to develop state-of-the-art digital technologies that challenge common perspectives of what is possible," commented Toshi Iwanami, president and CEO, NEC Solutions America. "We are proud to work directly with studios and exhibitors to deliver reliable digital solutions that enhance the audience's experience, while maintaining high levels of customer service and cost-effectiveness."

The NEC STARUS Digital Cinema system combines the immaculate imagery of digital cinema projection with the confidence that comes from NEC's award-winning fault tolerant server technology. Utilizing high-speed fibre channel connectivity, exhibitors can now alleviate the "Thursday night challenge" of having to reassign films for all screens of a multiplex, and guarantee continuous presentation quality to their audiences. NEC designed its digital cinema system to deliver simple multiplex and presentation management in addition to seamless integration at a competitive price. Theatre managers are able to benefit from the National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) requirement of transferring 2-hour movie files, from one auditorium to another, within 15-minutes.

"NEC STARUS Digital Cinema systems represents an all-in-one, upgradeable solution that scales across multiple complexes efficiently and cost-effectively," said Kurt Schwenk, director of Media Solutions for NEC Solutions America. "This revolutionary system will transform and improve feature quality, provide unprecedented redundancy and dramatically reduce operating expenses."

Utilizing best-of-class technology innovations, the NEC Solutions America Media Solutions Division leverages NEC's world-class expertise in visual display products, infrastructure, and integration services to develop specialized, system-wide solutions for the delivery and management of digital content. By combining the expertise of movie-making professionals with the technological innovation of NEC, the Media Solutions Division is creating all-encompassing, practical digital cinema solutions that meet the requirements of the cinema industry.

Reliability of STAR*Cor Multiplex Server
At the center of NEC's STARUS system is the NEC STAR*Cor multiplex server. STAR*Cor is a fault tolerant server that offers full redundancy for up to 99.999% continuous uptime to theatre chains. STAR*Cor transmits the presentation in conjunction with the STAR*Show screen server delivering unprecedented redundancy. NEC's fault tolerant solution is already proven within the business environment and is now uniquely positioned to serve the needs of digital cinema. Every component in this one-of-a-kind server has an identical twin component for ensured hardware redundancy eliminating downtime.

Flexibility of STAR*Show Screen Servers
The NEC STARUS system includes the NEC STAR*Show digital cinema screen server. Designed for easy installation and manageability, STAR*Show comes standard with configuration software and a suite of software tools to monitor, analyze and manage server performance. NEC is providing a scalable server unit that can seamlessly grow into a multiplex-wide solution without the need to replace the unit itself.

Brilliance of STAR*Beam DLP Projectors
As part of the multiplex-wide system deployment of the NEC STARUS system, NEC Solutions America is introducing a line of STAR*Beam DLP digital cinema projectors. The STAR*Beam iS8 projector and STAR*Beam iS15 projector are Texas Instruments-licensed projectors using DLP cinema-grade "dark chip" technology. NEC is one of only three manufacturers with the rights to incorporate this technology into their projectors. NEC Solutions America is the sole provider of NEC DLP Cinema projectors in North America, and is ideally positioned to lead the industry in display development, manufacturing and fulfillment.

NEC Solutions America will be showcasing all of its Media Solutions at the ShowEast 2004 Conference in Orlando, Fl., October 25 - 28; suite Q.
