NEC / Pioneer acquisition

Plasma display rights transferred By David Hague
On July 1, 2004 Pioneer Corporation finalised its acquisition of the NEC Plasma Display Corporation and all the intellectual property rights NEC holds in relation to plasma.

The above agreement will be effective as of September 30, 2004.According to Ken Barelli, managing director of Pioneer Electronics Australia, one of Pioneers key areas of focus is to further expand the plasma display business.

?The NEC acquisition gives Pioneer extra capacity to manufacture plasma TVs, as well as the flexibility to make plasma TVs in a wider variety of sizes, said Barelli. As part of the Memorandum of Understanding, Pioneer will manufacturer plasma TVs for NEC and other companies, which will be handled by the channels that currently exist. ?It is common in our industry for brands to supply technology and products to other brands, said Barelli. In the short term, the manufacturing of Pioneer plasma TVs will remain the same. But ultimately, Pioneer will combine the best of both Pioneer and NEC technology. Barelli expects Pioneer Electronics Australia to benefit from the new plasma factory as early as the end of this calendar year and enable it to meet the current industry demand for the technology.Adding to its investment in plasma, The Pioneer Corporation recently opened a new plasma factory in China.
