NC community college campus on lockdown after staff member reports man in parking lot with gun By The Associated Press

HICKORY, N.C. (AP) ' Students are being escorted from buildings and classes have been cancelled at a community college in North Carolina where a staff member reported seeing a man walking through a parking lot with a handgun.

The website of Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory warns that both the main and east campuses are on lockdown. People are advised not to leave or enter the campus. The website says classes are canceled for Wednesday afternoon and evening.

About 5,000 students are on the two campuses, along with about 30 children in a daycare. Before noon, police officers began escorting students from east campus classrooms that had been searched.

Hickory police did not immediately return a call to The Associated Press.
